Hunger Exists Here

Hunger Exists Here-whole_muralXavier Cortada, “Hunger Exists Here: A National Message Mural,” mixed media on canvas, 2005

The collaborative message mural was created by Cuban-American artist, attorney, and activist Xavier Cortada and the 11th Class of Emerson National Hunger Fellows and was previously housed at DC Central Kitchen.  Thoughts of passers-by were also incorporated as the mural was painted publicly in two DC neighborhoods. The painting represents the diverse group’s ideas, emotions, and experiences regarding hunger and poverty.

Painted July 29th and 30th, 2005 at Union Station and Eastern Market, the mural was designed to challenge two misconceptions about hunger: that hunger is only a problem in the “third world” and the stereotype of who is hungry in the United States.
