  • Presentation of the first five of ten Master-Peace 2000 murals at First Night Miami Beach, Miami Beach Convention Center, New Year’s Eve (4:30 pm – midnight), December 31, 1999.

  • Unveiling of 16′ x 24′ glass mosaic mural on the facade of the Juvenile Courthouse to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Juvenile Courts, Miami -Dade County Juvenile Courthouse, 3300 N.W. 27th Avenue, Miami, Florida.  December 10, 1999.
  • “In the Capitol” — Xavier Cortada’s solo exhibit in Florida State Cabinet meeting room.  The exhibit, to be held from November 26, 1999 through February 17, 2000 is part of the State’s Division of Cultural Affairs Capitol Complex exhibit program, Tallahassee, FL.
  • Building a World Safe for the Dreams of Children,”  a Charity Happy Hour sneak preview unveiling of the mural to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Juvenile Courts, Grand Bay Hotel Penthouse, Coconut Grove, Florida, November 10, 1999.
  • WebStudio sessions (Internet-based collaborative art-making process) for the Master-Peace 2000 project.
  • Master-Peace 2000:  Working with ten high schools during the 1999-2000 academic year to create ten murals commemorating the millennium’s past ten centuries.  The Internet-based project is a collaborative effort of Miami-Dade Art in Public Places, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Division of Life Skills, and Regis House, Inc., a non-profit community-based center helping children and families.  Miami, FL.

  • Ife-Ile Exhibition, Frances Wolfson Gallery, Miami-Dade Community College Wolfson Campus, 300 NE 2nd Avenue, 5th Floor, Miami, FL, September 27 to October 15, 1999 (The group exhibit’s opening reception is on September 27, 1999 from 5 pm – 8 pm).
  • Judge for Daimler-Chrysler Corporation’s “El Arte Que Nos Mueve” (The Art that Moves Us) national Jeep art contest, San Antonio, Texas, September 22, 1999.
  • “Dear God,” a  collaborative mural for Coral Gables Congregational Church’s Sprit Sunday, September 12, 1999, Coral Gables, FL.
  • Compartiendo con Panama, a collaborate effort that includes an art exhibit at the University of Panama, a substance abuse conference in Panama City,  and a mural creation and art project in three Panamanian cities:  Colon, Chiriqui, and Panama City.  The project is   sponsored by La Cruz Blanca Panamena, Florida Volunteer Corps (FAVA/CA) and Regis House, September 3 -11, 1999, Panama City, Panama.
  • Dedication of the “Lifescape” mural at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Mailman Center, Center Lobby, September 2, 1999, 9:15 am to 9:45 am., Miami, FL.
  • Working with youth from the Miami Halfway House in creation of pro-social mural, Miami, FL.
  • Facilitating art sessions with children in Foster Care and other Juvenile Justice programs at the Miami Art Museum, August 28th, 1999, Miami, FL.
  • Launching of the Art in Public Places’ PATH (Public Art Transforming Housing), a collaborative  project with Miami-Dade Housing Department and the Miami-Dade Police Department aimed at eliminating drugs in nine public housing sites.  Dedication Ceremony and Kick-off Celebration:   Youth from Wynwood working with artist Xavier Cortada unveil their PATH projects as they unveil the grand opening of their new space, the Castle and kick off a year of PATH.  July 28, 1999, 4 pm, at 225 NW 35th Street, Wynwood, Miami, FL.
  • Creation of the “Lifescape” mural with patients from the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital Children’s Cancer Clinic, Miami, FL.
  • Worked with youth at Crossroads,  the CHARLEE pre-independent living program to develop a collaborative mural on Conflict Resolution, Miami, FL.
  • Launching of the Art in Public Places’ PATH (Public Art Transforming Housing), a collaborative  project with Miami-Dade Housing Department and the Miami-Dade Police Department aimed at eliminating drugs in nine public housing sites.

  • Xavier Cortada will lead participants of the 5th Annual Conference of the AIDS Policy Center for Children, Youth and Families, “Voices 99:  Renewing the Commitment,” in the creation of a collaborative mural.  The mural will be unveiled by the artist, several Congress people and the nation’s “AIDS Czar” Sandy Thurman, on Capitol Hill on the 25th of May, 1999, Washington, D.C.
  • Xavier Cortada will use Internet technology to create art projects with students in four Miami-Dade elementary schools.  This month-long project is a continuation of the Master Peace and WebStudio efforts.
  • Created three original pieces which Merck Pharmaceuticals’ community service volunteers reproduced as indoor murals in the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind Children’s Activity Room, April 28, 1999.
  • Opening of the Webstudio– an Internet-based collaborative art project, which allows participants to interact with the artist through two webcams and a live chatroom.  The WebStudio is sponsored by a New Forms grant from the Miami Dade Cultural Affairs Council and the Art Center South Florida.   April’s WebStudio Sessions  focus on the topic of Love.  Sessions are scheduled for different times during the month, see schedule for more detailed information.
  • Dedication and unveiling of Master Peace murals in four Miami-Dade County Public Schools.  Master Peace is a collaborative effort of Miami-Dade Art in Public Places, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Division of Life Skills, and Regis House, Inc., a non-profit community-based center helping children and families.  Please see the Master Peace Spring 1999 Calendar for the more information on of each of the four ceremonies.

  • 3rd Annual Miami Beach SWIM FOR LIFE: Presentation of the Bridging the Gap Mural at the Awards Luncheon and Gala Dinner of the one-mile open-water swim benefiting the South Beach AIDS Project and the Cancer Lifeline of the Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Breast Center, Miami beach FL, March 27, 1999.
  • Facilitation of Community Mural at the National Diversity Forum–Creating Partnerships to Save Lives, February 23rd, 1999 at the Koubek Center, Miami, Florida.   The completed mural entitled “The Message,” was presented to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation after his keynote address.
  • AIDS Walk 99 Ceremonies on Sunday, February 21, 1999 in Bayfront Park:  Dedication of Bridging the Gap Mural (a collaborative mural created by the participants of the United Nation’s 12th World AIDS Conference in Geneva), Miami, Florida.
  • “ONANI: the African presence in contemporary Latin American and Caribbean visual arts,” at El Taller Puertorriqueño in Philadelphia, PA, the group show opens on Jan 22, 1999; artists’ reception on February 12, 1999.

  • FIRST NIGHT – Cortada will bring in the new year by facilitating “1999: Preparing for a new Me-llennium” on December 31, 1998 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
